Climbing the Slide

#climbingtheslide
Learning curves are tough. But how much does working on something you are excited about mitigate the pain of efforting that new skill or knowledge? *in Spanish "skill" is: "destreza" or "habilidad"...I looked it up...4 times, before I finally had it memorized*
I've watched each of our kids learn the wrong way to ascend the slide...why do they do that? It's not easy. The ladder is there for a reason, right? Physically, it should be the easier ascent. But our kids love to climb that freaking slide...probably just to annoy me, by forcing me to constantly be on the lookout for other kids queuing up to use the slide in the proper way. Maybe that's just how much my kids love lectures? Yeah...nah.
Watch them. Look at those little muscles churning to find balance and the strength to make that slippery ascent. It's hard. They fall and bust their lip. They sweat and concentrate. And they love it! Even when their deranged sibling comes careening down from the top and they tumble down, limbs akimbo, in to a snotty pile in the dirt. They laugh. And they keep trying to get back to the top.
So, what are you working through? Learning? Do you love any part of it? As we muddle through learning Spanish, learn how to use the Metro system, or just try to figure out how to buy groceries, we get frustrated. It's wicked hard. At times, soul crushingly demoralizing. But, we also meet wonderful people and find ourselves strolling down charming cobblestone streets lined with orange trees. THAT, I love! It makes me enjoy speaking Spanish like a two year old. It takes the sting out of unwittingly taking twice as long and paying twice as much as needed for a bus ride to a museum.
So keep pushing, amigo! Keep those legs pumping, that brain...uh, wrinkling? If you're passionate about it, then keep hold of the joy in it. Those bumps and bruises will fade in the glory of sticking your tongue out at your big brother down there on the ground;) #bigburtonbonvoyage #nineofus #austintovalencia #adventurefamily
